Gained, Hair, and Healthy Food

UGH.

So... I weighed myself this morning...and just as I suspected - I have gained weight.

That's what happens when you only kinda sorta follow your plan. I feel guilty.

I can't dwell on it though. I just have to learn from it and move forward.

I Need Your Advice

I've been eating a low calorie diet - and not adjusting what types of foods I eat (for example I had an oatmeal creme pie for breakfast). I would like to try to work in more healthy food (organic and such), but as I'm sure you all know, it's expensive!

Any tips for health food on a budget?

Water!

Now, those of you on my facebook saw my status yesterday that said I drank 250oz. of water before leaving work.

I know you were afraid that I might drown myself (literally). Thank you all for being concerned! I did a little research and it turns out I'm just fine. It's not really the amount of water you drink that is harmful, it's how fast you drink it. I paced myself all day and exceeded my goal of drinking half my weight in ounces. But, just to be safe, I will probably bring it on down to 150-200oz a day (I'm at 75oz right now).

Now, on to more exciting things...I got my hair cut!

Listen, try not to be jealous of my necklace.

This photo reminds me - I want to do before pictures for you all to see. I want to be able to look back and SEE progress (not just on the scale). Although I'm nervous (scared crapless) to share them with you, I think it's an important step. I will probably tackle that this weekend.

Tonight, I'm making spaghetti for dinner.

What are you having? Anything healthy?

  1. Don't feel like you have to go organic to be healthy! For starters, start cutting out processed junk (like oatmeal creme pie ;)). Go for whole grains and real foods that don't come in plastic packages.

Also, don't calories too low or it will work against you. If I lived closer, I'd test your metabolism (it's what my company does), but since I don't, log onto 411fit. It's an awesome site that will set you up with the calories you need and give you somewhere to track your intake. Most people cut calories too low and it causes them to plateau or gain.

Ok, stepping off my soapbox now...

No instant Oatmeal! Only stove top. Breakfast: Glass of water, Oatmeal, water, banana, water and Greek yogurt. And may I add, I'm proud of you.

  3. Hey, Martha Jane. Billy and I are using sparkpeople.com. You can go on there and put in your weight and how much you want to lose and in what timeframe. It will calculate the calories you should be eating (and tell you if you are expecting too much). We eat whatever we want, but we count it on there. But you can also use their suggested meal plan. Billy doesn't eat enough calories usually. We're both losing most of the time. I have more trouble than he does. But anyway, just thought I'd share what has been helping us. Keep it up. It will pay off!!

  4. Brittany - Thank you! I will check out 411fit! I asked my doctor how many calories to eat daily - and he said 1800. So I'm staying around there. And DON'T STEP OFF YOUR SOAP BOX! - You have too much good info! :)

Christina - yes, you may :) And thank you!

Vanessa - I signed up for Spark People but I never did anything with it. I need to poke around a little more. That's great that you guys are loosing! How much have you lost if you don't mind me asking?

  5. Hi. I've lost 16 lbs and Billy has lost 10. We aren't doing it very fast. Started seriously in March. We stay around 1900 -2000 calories for the average. Right now I weigh 269. There's a factor of 10-12 that you can use to estimate your caloric needs. If you use 10 then it is assuming you are more sedentary. So based on that, I should need 2690 calories to maintain my weight. If I decrease that amount by 500 calories a day, I should lose 1 lb a week. Since I'm a little lower according to what sparkpeople calculated for me, I am losing a little more than that. And if I keep up with the calories, then it's so much easier to judge what I should and shouldn't eat. Also if I eat too much one day, it's ok because I'm still eating less calories that what my body requires.

  8. Hey Martha Jane!

In response to "Ok, so I Need Your Advice.... I would like to try to work in more healthy food (organic and such), but as I'm sure you all know, it's expensive!...Any tips for health food on a budget?"

A tip from my favorite food book, "Food Rules" by Michael Pollan: Don't eat anything your grandmother couldn't have made with her hands (ie: processed/pre-made stuffs found in boxes) and honestly, if you stick to whole fruits, veggies, grains and non-processed meats... it's NOT that expensive. The $$$$ stuff is in the boxes in the middle of the store, not around the edges. A rule of thumb is to stay on the perimeter of the grocery store and stick to whole foods.

Another tip his book suggests is - eat sweets as often as you're willing to make them - in other words, if you want pie/cake, you have to make it from scratch (not boxed). This way, you're less encouraged to "grab n go" - and you've worked for the goodies.

Think about it this way, MJ, even if it is slightly higher and more time consuming, you can either pay now for better quality food, or pay later in health care costs... either way you pay.
